Another 40 people have tested positive for coronavirus across Lanarkshire

The Scottish Government today said that 284 people have now tested positive for coronavirus in Lanarkshire.

That is an increase of 40 new cases, up from 244 yesterday, a rise of 16 per cent.

It comes as 76 patients across Scotland who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have died.

The Scottish test numbers for April 1 show

A total of 17,007 people in Scotland have been tested. Of these:

■ 14, 697 tests were confirmed negative

■ 2,310 tests were positive

■ 76 patients who tested positive have died

It comes as the Scottish Government has doubled its intensive care capacity to 360 beds and work is underway to quadruple it to around 700.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the latest figures at a press conference this afternoon.

Scotland is still on lockdown and Scots are being reminded to follow the new regulations.

Ms Sturgeon said: "These measures are essential for the protection of others.

"Coronovirus this is the biggest challenge of our lifetime and  measures we take to tackle it must reflect the magnitude of that.

"These measures are essential to slow down the spread of this virus. They are essential to reduce the peak impact of it."
