Another 256 people have now died in UK with coronavirus

Another 256 people have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus.

NHS England confirmed the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England is now 24,345.

Of the 186 new deaths announced today:

- 45 occurred on May 14

- 66 occurred on May 13

- 32 occurred on May 12

The figures also show 39 of the new deaths took place between May 1 and May 11, and four took place in April.

Public Health Wales said a further nine people have died after testing positive for coronavirus, taking the total in the country to 1,173.

Another 126 people have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of positive cases in Wales to 11,834.

This afternoon Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that 46 Covid-19 patients had died, bringing the country's death toll to 2,053.

There have been 15 further deaths in Northern Ireland.

No UK-wide figures from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have been released, so the total is taken from each nation's individual statements.

NHS England releases updated figures each day showing the dates of every coronavirus-related death in hospitals in England, often including previously uncounted deaths that took place several days or even weeks ago.

This is because of the time it takes for deaths to be confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19, for post-mortem examinations to be processed and for data from the tests to be validated.

The figures published today by NHS England show April 8 continues to have the highest number for the most hospital deaths occurring on a single day, with a current total of 889.

Yesterday (May 15), figures showed 33,614 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK.

This was up by 428 from 33,186 from the previous day and is also said to be widely short of the actual total number of UK deaths with coronavirus.
