Another 21,000 people will be told to shield from coronavirus in Wales

Another 21,000 people in Wales have been added to the list of those who need to shield from coronavirus.

The majority of the people added are within high-risk categories already identified which include those who have received organ transplants; people with specific cancers; those with severe respiratory conditions; people with rare disease that increase the risk of infections; and women who are pregnant with significant heart disease.

They have now been selected after further searches of the Welsh NHS' medical care systems.

In addition to these groups, the chief medical officers of the four UK nations have agreed that all those on kidney dialysis should be advised to shield.

This will bring the total number of people in Wales told to shield from coronavirus to 121,000 with all of them eligible to receive food boxes.

The food boxes, which people request from their local authority, contain essential foods in packages and tins and will provide food for one week for one person who is shielding.

A typical box contains a range of items, including UHT long life milk, tinned produce, pasta, toilet roll, breakfast cereal, some fruit and vegetables and bread.

Health Secretary Vaughan Gething said the list of shielded people may be further updated and anyone added will be sent a letter by Chief Medical Officer Dr Frank Atherton.

Mr Gething said: "The list of high risk conditions is under constant review and we are following the latest scientific and medical advice to ensure we have identified and contacted everyone who needs to be shielded. Given the severe nature of the measures those who are shielding must take – self-isolation for 12 weeks which includes reducing all non-essential contact with other household members – it is important only those classed as high risk are added to it.

"In line with the initial 12-week shielding advice issued in late March, the latest letters advise people to shield until at least June 15.

"Local authorities and the major food retailers will receive the updated Welsh shielded patient list at the same time so that the additional people identified can access the support being provided."

The health minister also announced new arrangements to ensure people who are shielding or self-isolating can continue to get their prescription medicines in partnership with the National Pharmacy Association, Wales’ third sector organisations and Royal Mail.

The arrangements will support community pharmacies and dispensing doctors to allocate deliveries to volunteer drivers where people do not have family, friends or neighbours who can collect their prescriptions for them.

The volunteers have been recruited directly by the Welsh Government, alongside the British Red Cross, and include individuals from the pharmaceutical industry, optometry practices and Welsh Government employees.

Each volunteer has been matched to a participating community pharmacy or dispensing doctor to offer additional medicine deliveries. A further recruitment drive will be launched with support from Community Voluntary Councils across Wales.

Over 650 community pharmacies in Wales and 18 dispensing doctors have signed up to the new scheme, with over 400 volunteers already recruited.
