Another 12 deaths linked with coronavirus have been reported in Wales

A further 12 people have died in Wales with Covid-19, taking the total number of deaths so far to 1,203, according to Public Health Wales.

In total, 12,304 cases have been confirmed in the country, including 162 in the last 24 hours, the latest figures from the national public health agency have revealed this afternoon.

Incident director Dr Robin Howe said: "We have been working hard to increase our testing capacity."

He said Public Health Wales welcomed Saturday’s announcement by Health Minister Vaughan Gething regarding the extension of coronavirus testing to all care home residents and staff.

In Wales, 49,284 individuals have been tested, with 57,977 tests carried out in total. Of those, 36,980 were negative.

Last week, the Welsh Government published a Test, Trace, Protect stratgey.

Dr Howe said Public Health Wales would continue to work in partnership with the Welsh Government, communities, the wider NHS and local governent.

He added: “As of Monday, May 11 May, our capacity was at 5,330 tests a day in Wales. We know there is more to do as demand increases and we will continue to ramp up this capacity.”

Yesterday, 1,743 tests were carried out.

The Welsh Government announced on Friday, May 8 lockdown arrangements would continue in Wales for a further three weeks.

Dr Howe said: “In Wales, stay-at-home guidance remains that – wherever you can, you should stay at home.

“Although we appear to have passed the peak of new cases in Wales, Covid-19 is still circulating in every part of the country.

“The single most important action we can all take in fighting the virus is to stay at home and we thank each and every person across Wales for doing their bit to help slow the spread.

Public Health Wales is encouraging everyone to download the coronavirus symptom study app, which has been supported by Welsh Government.
