Another 1,040 people test positive for coronavirus in the UK

Another 1,040 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK.

It is now the sixth consecutive day that confirmed cases of the virus have been over 1,000.

Sunday's total is up by 28 on Saturday.

There was a slight drop on last Sunday's figure (August 9) of 1,062.

As of 9am on 16 August, a total of 318,484 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the UK.

A further five people who tested positive for coronavirus in the last 28 days have also died.

This brings the death toll to 41,366 from 41,361 at the same point yesterday.

That includes people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus in hospitals as well as the wider community.

The Department of Health began publishing the number of daily deaths again on Wednesday after an absence of nearly a month.

This was because Health Secretary Matt Hancock ordered an urgent review into how the number of deaths from coronavirus is calculated by Public Health England.

Following the results of the review, the Department of Health  reduced the death toll by more than 5,000.

The DHSC said the change came after the UK government and devolved administrations agreed to publish the number of deaths that have occurred within 28 days of a positive lab-confirmed Covid test result each day.

Previously ,deaths were included for anyone who had died following a positive coronavirus test at any point.
