Anonymous note pays tribute to the 'marvellous people' of Castlefield in Manchester city centre

An anonymous note has been left paying tribute to the Good Samaritans of Manchester city centre.

It appears someone took a nasty tumble on the cobbles by the canal towpath in Castlefield last week, suffering serious facial injuries.

A number of people came to the rescue and got the victim into a taxi to hospital.

Now the grateful victim has left a 'Thank You' sign and a heartfelt note tied to the railings near the scene of the accident.

"...To the lovely folk of the towpath who looked after me when my face lost a fight with the cobbles last week," the letter reads.

"It's all a bit of a blur so I worry I won't recognise you if I see you again, but I'm really grateful for your kindness.

"The lady and runners who picked me up and saw me to safety to a taxi and the marvellous people of A&E and the dental hospital who put me back together again. X"

It has been suggested on social media that the victim was a woman who fell and hit her face while running to work.

Residents have been cheered by the uplifting story of community spirit.

One local mum who spotted the note tweeted: "Saw this lovely message on the tow path. Well done everyone involved. Yes there are lovely people round our way."

It follows reports earlier this year that Castlefield has been plagued by anti-social behaviour and muggings.

Some residents told the Manchester Evening News they felt too scared to walk alone in the area although police said only a 'small percentage' of city centre crime occurs there.

The Castlefield Forum, a community group, meets regularly to discuss issues such as safety, planning applications and conservation.

The next meeting is due to take place at Dukes 92 bar on Monday from 7pm.
