Annual duck race event at Salford Quays is BACK

An annual charity event is engaging the community in a unique way to raise funds for essential medical equipment for hospitals in the region.

The children's health charity MedEquip4Kids is back on Good Friday, April 7, at the Salford Watersports Centre (1pm – 5pm) to host its annual Quays Duck Race. The event has become a tradition with hundreds of bright yellow rubber ducks taking to the water to raise funds for essential medical equipment for hospitals.

Based in Manchester, MedEquip4Kids is dedicated to ensuring that all kids have access to the finest medical care when they need it most. The charity has raised millions for medical equipment and play facilities at children’s hospitals across the North West.

Local businesses are showing support for the event by sponsoring and decorating a Mega Duck to compete in the corporate race. In last year’s duck race, The Doctors Laboratory won best dressed duck in the corporate race with their duck “The Quacken”.

While the Mega Ducks are sponsored by businesses, individuals and families can purchase a smaller duckling for the main race for £2.50 either on the day or online.

The competition includes two duck races, family-friendly entertainment, delectable food stands serving pizza, hamburgers, and freshly made doughnuts, as well as a face painter and a tombola with prizes. Beaverbrooks the Jewellers and The Botanist Deansgate will also be donating gifts as prizes on the day for the lucky winners.

Ghazala Baig, Chief Executive at MedEquip4Kids says: “We can’t wait to welcome our local community back to Salford Quays for our biggest event of the year. It’s always such a good day out and we’re so grateful to everyone who helps make it a success.

“This year we’re fundraising for projects at hospitals across Greater Manchester, including a refurbished sensory room at Royal Oldham, patient monitors and new cots at Tameside General, and postural equipment for disabled children in Bolton.

"Your support will make such a difference to unwell and injured children in the region.”
