'Annual' bar burglary devastates owners as 17 year old held by police

A 17 year old was arrested after a bar was broken into in what its owners are calling an 'annual tradition'.

Riddling Rack, in Newton-le-Willows was reportedly broken into on Sunday night.

Co-owner Alexandra Myhill told the ECHO : "I honestly think the stress decreases with the amount of times it happens, this is the third time in three years."

Alexandra claimed that intruders entered the premises and attempted to steal from the business' safe.

She said: "The worst part about it is we now have to wait for forensic teams to come so we can't open so it means losing a days takings, and obviously it's been bank holiday Monday making it harder to get hold of a new door, joiners and all that sort of thing.

"It's hard to put a figure on the amount but losing takings and having to buy a new door, it's a large amount of money."

The owners took to Facebook to reveal the break-in, posting a picture of the damage caused.

In the Facebook post, the Riddling Rack said: "The annual breaking in of the Riddling Rack happened last night, it’s almost as traditional as the Xmas market!

"The good news is they have one in custody, they even had the helicopter out for us last night!"

Co-owner Alexandra added: "We are obviously angry and frustrated that the Riddling Rack has been targeted yet again but we won’t let this beat us.

"We would like to extend our thanks to Merseyside Police who poured resources in to catching them and to our local community who as ever have been our biggest support."

Merseyside Police dog team took to Twitter to thank police dog Zak who assisted in the investigation, they said: "PD ZAK and National Police Air Service assisted to locate a burglar hiding in Newton Le Willows, shortly after dumping the stolen motorbike he had used in his escape.

"Not finished there, PD ZAK also located the stolen safe and balaclava belonging to one of the offenders."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We arrested a man following a burglary in Newton-le-Willows on Sunday, 2 January.

"At around 10.25pm we received a report that a burglary was in progress at the Riddling Rack bar on High Street.

"Officers attended and saw four males dressed in dark clothing making off from the scene on a scrambler bike towards Ashton Road.

"With the assistance of the National Police Air Helicopter Service, officers located the scrambler bike and detained a 17-year-old male in a field off Vista Road."

A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle, taken into custody and questioned by police.

He has since been released pending investigation

A safe which had been stolen from the bar containing approximately £3,000 in cash was also recovered.

CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing to locate the three further suspects and anyone with any information is asked to contact police.

Detective Sergeant Allan Lawley said: “Business burglaries are not victimless crimes – they have a huge impact on the hardworking people who are trying to earn a living in the heart of our communities.

“While we have made one arrest and have recovered a vehicle and a substantial sum of money, our enquiries continue.

“If you were in Newton-le-Willows on Sunday evening and saw anything or anyone suspicious then please get in touch. Similarly if you were driving in the area and have dashcam footage, please review it and let us know. Information you hold could be vital to our enquiries.”
