Announcement hints at Premier League decision ahead of showdown meeting

The National League have announced their season has been suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The campaign was initially scheduled to be halted until April 3 at the earliest but that date has been scrapped ahead of Friday's deadline.

Non-league season cancelled: Reaction to FA decision to scrap season for Step 3 to 6 and what it could mean for Liverpool

Last week the Football Association confirmed steps 3-6 of the non-league system - starting below the National League (step 1) and National League North and South (step 2) - would be declared null and void.

Clubs - including several local outfits - have rallied against the decision including Vauxhall Motors, who had already secured promotion from the North West Counties First Division South.

The National League announcement hints toward a similar decision from the Premier League when they meet on Friday.

"The National League Board met earlier today and has reviewed its prior decision to suspend the competition until at least 3rd April 2020," a statement read.

"In consideration of the very serious and unprecedented national public health emergency caused by the coronavirus, the Board has taken the decision to suspend the National League, National League North and National League South competitions indefinitely.

"The National League is currently obtaining specialist legal advice, is consulting regularly with The Football Association and other stakeholders, and is committed to involving its member clubs in a pending decision on how best to conclude the 2019/20 season."
