Annie Lennox reveals depression struggle as a teen due to 'dreich' Aberdeen weather

Annie Lennox has revealed she suffered from depression due to the weather growing up in Aberdeen.

The former Eurythmics star said she had regular bouts of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as a teenager in her home city.

The singer told how the “dreich” climate and long hours of darkness in the north-east had a big impact on her mood.

Lennox, 65, now lives in Los Angeles but insists she is not a sun-worshipper.

Speaking on the Great Scot podcast, the musician said: “Los Angeles does get grey, don’t think that the sun shines 24/7, because it does not – and thank God, because I’m not really into sun that much.

“I’m not a sun-worshipper but I do like the light.

"I get that SAD syndrome, I really get it badly and I did get it when I lived in Aberdeen.

“I didn’t realise that was what was affecting me. It doesn’t bode well, so I do like a little sunlight.

“The word that sums up a lot of the Scottish weather is dreich. It’s not always dreich but it often is.”

SAD is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. It is sometimes known as “winter depression” .
