Annfield Plain club closed for deep clean after customer tests positive for Covid-19

A County Durham bar has closed after a customer tested positive for coronavirus.

The Annfield Plain Democratic Club Institute, on Front Street, and Institute has shut down to undergo a deep clean.

The bar is expected to reopen on Friday, October 24.

Writing on social media, a spokesman for the bar said: “Unfortunately due to a club member testing positive for coronavirus and with advice from Durham County Council a decision has been made to close the club until Friday 23rd October at 11am.

“Whilst the club is closed it will undergo a deep clean.”

On October 17, County Durham recorded the second-highest infection rate in the North East and was 26th on the national list after cases rose by 48% in just one week.

County Durham has seen the biggest leap with cases soaring to 1,807, 340.9 per 100,000, from 1,218 the previous week (229.8 per 100,000).

A major Covid-19 outbreak at Durham University has seen almost 1,000 students and staff members test positive within one week.

In the week leading to October 14, a total of 958 students and six members of staff contracted the virus.

This follows another 222 cases reported by the university the week before.

It comes as 800 students living at the institute’s St Mary’s and Collingwood College were told to quarantine following a spike in cases.

Meanwhile North Durham Academy, in Stanley, closed its doors due to 31% of its staff being off work due to coronavirus.
