Anne Holton, Kaine's wife, steps down as Virginia education secretary

WASHINGTON _ Anne Holton, wife of Hillary Clinton's running mate pick Tim Kaine, resigned Tuesday as Virginia's secretary of education.

Holton made the decision to step down after Kaine, a senator from Virginia, was chosen to be Clinton's running mate, according to Richmond TV station WRIC. She has been secretary since Jan. 2014.

"Over the past two years, we have worked together to achieve significant accomplishments, including substantial investments in K-12 and higher education ... and life-changing work in some of Virginia's most challenged school divisions," Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said of Holton in a statement.

WRIC also reported that McAuliffe appointed Deputy Secretary of Education Dietra Trent to replace Holton, effective immediately.

Holton's father, Republican Abner Linwood Holton Jr., was the commonwealth's governor from 1970 to 1974.

Kaine was governor from 2006 to 2010, making her the second daughter of a Virginia governor to become the state's first lady, following Martha Jefferson Randolph. She was the first first lady to live in the executive mansion both as a child and as a first lady.

Holton was a judge on the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court in Richmond and served as chief judge for three years. In 2007, she launched "For Keeps: Families for all Virginia Teens" as first lady, an initiative for children in foster care.

She and Kaine met at Harvard Law School; they both earned their degrees in 1983 and were married in 1984. The couple has three children, Nat, who is a Marine, Woody and Annella.
