Anne Hegerty feared her ancestors might have 'owned' some of Shaun Wallace's relatives

Anne Hegerty was very concerned while delving into her family history with fellow Chaser Shaun Wallace.

The Chase stars took part in a brand new series of ITV show DNA Secrets, where pairs of celebrities set off on a quest to discover where they come from.

The popular TV duo, otherwise known as The Governess and The Dark Destroyer, use cutting edge DNA technology and genealogy to go back through their family histories.

They come face to face with living relatives they never before knew existed - and Anne is stunned to find out she is related to royalty.

While unearthing secrets from their past, Anne travelled with Shaun to Jamaica on an emotional voyage of discovery to uncover more about his bloodline.

Speaking about their trip to the Caribbean, Shaun said: "It was amazing. Without giving anything away, I found out about one relative from the dim and distant past who was very altruistic, and that was a really poignant moment for me.

"It was also the first time Anne had been to Jamaica, and that was great because she was basically coming to my territory and she really embraced it. She loved the food and the culture; it was a special time.

In tonight's opening episode, Shaun admits Anne was concerned some of her ancestors might have "owned" some of his relatives.

He adds: "Before we went, I think Anne was worried we'd find out that her ancestors used to own my ancestors of something, but, luckily, that wasn't the case."

Initially, Shaun comes face to face with an uncomfortable past that turns out to be not quite as it first appears.

Against all expectations, he manages to trace his family back eight generations to the early 1700s and finds an ancestor who amassed a small fortune in Cuba.

Shaun was also shocked to discover some of his ancestors had some similar characteristics to him, telling TV Times magazine: "There are certain traits inherited from my ancestors that me and my family clearly have an aptitude for, like maths and figures.

"It was fascinating to discover that, because it seems DNA really does carry on through generations. There were also some wonderful coincidences in terms of birthdays as well."

Shaun and Anne embark on a road trip that spans from Jamaica to the UK - with The Governess finding out she is connected to royalty.

What Shaun has no idea about though is that there is more to Anne than meets the eye when he finds out he might need to start curtsying to her.

The quiz genius finds out she is 19th cousin to Queen Elizabeth II, 95, and King Robert the Bruce was her 20-times great grandfather.

Anne is shocked by the revelation, but then explains that her grandmother had previously revealed this bit of family history but she did not believe her claims.

"Wow, that is cool. But my grandmother was the most tremendous liar," Anne admits while speaking to the show's historian.

"My aunt said she was a romancer and she'd embroider life a bit, so I always felt that anything from my grandmother had to be taken with a pinch of salt."

Anne finds out she is related to the family bearing the surname Hayes on her mum's side and one of her family members married the King's daughter Princess Elizabeth in 1370.

"My mother was always deeply disapproving of the idea of anyone knowing about their ancestors. She'd say, 'It doesn't prove a thing, dear'," says Anne.

"As a child I was always curious about this stuff and my mother was always very repressive.

Anne discovers she is related to royalty, but Shaun won't call her Queen Anne (ITV)

"I think it was because on my mother's mother's side there's quite a bit of posh, and my mum thought I'd grow up to be a terrible snob. But I've already grown up to be a terrible snob, so really there's nothing to hide."

Although one thing that Shaun makes abundantly clear is that he will refuse to call her Queen Anne from now on.

Anne also discovers one of her ancestors survived two German torpedo attacks during World War One, and they overcame the sinking of a ship by clinging onto an upturned lifeboat for four hours.

"I discovered my great-grandmother's first cousin was a deputy chief engineer on an ocean liner during World War One and survived two German torpedo attacks," she said.

"He clung onto an upturned lifeboat for four hours. I came away feeling really impressed by that level of endurance.

"I also handled the skull of an ancestor. I can't tell you any more, but it was a proud moment."

*A new series of DNA Journey starts with Anne and Shaun starts tonight at 9pm on ITV.
