Anne Hegarty says ITV struggle to book stars for Celebrity Chase over 'stupidity' fears

ITV show The Chase struggles to book celebrities on the show – because they fear looking stupid.

Anne Hegerty, aka The Governess, says as a result they have personalities that she has never heard of.

Previous stars to take part on the Bradley Walsh-fronted programme include Rev Kate Bottley, Dr Ranj Singh, Made in Chelsea’s Georgia ‘Toff’ Toffolo and comedian Ed Byrne.

Others have included X Factor presenter Kate Thornton, TOWIE star James Argent and comedian Lucy Porter.

She said: “On Celebrity Chase we used to have difficulty getting celebs on because they were terrified of looking stupid. We'd say, 'No you'll be fine.'"

She says that as a result they often get celebs she had never heard of – a problem they don't have on Britain's Brightest Celebrity Family, which she hosts.

The Chase star Anne Hegarty has revealed that ITV struggle to book stars for celebrity version of hit game show (ITV)

Anne reveals: "Doing Britain's Brightest Family was fun - but this one - Britain's Brightest Celebrity Family - well it's always cool to meet celebs. And I'd heard the names which is not the case on The Celebrity Chase. They take it seriously and it's very entertaining.”

Stars on the latter show have included Vanessa Feltz, Matthew Wright, Joe Pasquale soap star Antony Cotton, Neil Ruddock, and Colin Jackson.

Anne, who has starred as the Governess for over a decade, previously said The Chase is so popular in New Zealand she is “worshipped like a god” when she goes there.

She told the Mirror: “I can't ever imagine retiring. Ratings for The Chase have recently gone up by a million a day in this country. In New Zealand, it is shown twice a day and is watched by a third of the population.

“I can't walk down the street in Auckland without being mobbed. I remember when I was first there, I sent a message to the other Chasers, saying, 'I've found a Polynesian island where we are worshipped like gods! This is the job I was born for. I'm never going to do anything bigger than this. I am aware that this is the thing I'll be remembered for.”

Single Anne, 62, also told how she has given up on any chance of a relationship or romance as she does not see the point in it.

She says her autism makes her well equipped to be single and added: “I still get attracted to people, but there's no point in pursuing it.”
