Anne Hathaway Pairs Dramatic Maternity Top With Low-Rise Jeans at LA Premiere

LOS ANGELES — Anne Hathaway turned a red carpet into a fashion debate on Sunday, pairing a couture-caliber maternity top with a decidedly casual pair of jeans at the world premiere of "The End of Oak Street" in Burbank, California.

The 43-year-old actress, who is expecting her third child, wore a custom Atelier Prabal Gurung sculptural halter top crafted from celestial-blue silk Mikado with a vivid-crimson lining. The high-low design cropped in the front to expose her baby bump while extending into a cascading train behind her. She styled it with low-rise, wide-leg maternity jeans — a combination that stylist Erin Walsh, who curated the look, is known for using to blend formalwear with everyday pieces.

The jeans quickly became the outfit's most talked-about element. Where the top leaned dramatic and architectural, the denim read as off-duty, and that tension is exactly what divided viewers online. Some felt the contrast undercut the sophistication of the Prabal Gurung piece; others praised Hathaway for treating maternity dressing the same way she approaches any other red carpet look — with an unexpected twist rather than a safe, flowing gown.

That kind of styling contrast has become a recognizable thread in a broader shift sometimes called the "bump-out" trend, in which pregnant celebrities pair structured or elevated pieces with relaxed basics instead of traditional maternity silhouettes. Hathaway didn't originate the approach, but her premiere look is among the more striking recent examples of it, following a run of bold maternity styling throughout her press tour for "The Odyssey" earlier this summer.

Hathaway completed the outfit with Aquazzura's Gia pumps in a pink and fuchsia two-tone finish, along with a Bulgari Serpenti ring and bracelet — Hathaway serves as a global ambassador for the jewelry house. Her hair was pulled into a high ponytail by stylist Gregory Russell, and makeup artist Hung Vanngo finished the look with a bold red lip.

The premiere brought out the film's ensemble cast, including Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, Christian Convery and Jordan Alexa Davis, along with director David Robert Mitchell and producer J.J. Abrams. "The End of Oak Street," a science-fiction survival thriller about a suburban family transported to an unknown world, opens in theaters and IMAX on Aug. 14.

On the carpet, Hathaway spoke with PEOPLE about how this pregnancy feels different from her first two, which she experienced in her 30s. She said turning 40 shifted her perspective, explaining that she's become better at "being present in the moment, living in gratitude, not taking anything for granted."

Hathaway announced she was expecting her third child in a June Instagram video set to Barbara Lewis' "Baby, I'm Yours." She and husband Adam Shulman, married since 2012, are already parents to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6. Hathaway has previously spoken about the difficulty of conceiving both of her earlier pregnancies, and has continued to reference that journey while discussing her third.

Whether or not the jeans-and-couture pairing becomes a defining image of her maternity style, it fits a pattern Hathaway has leaned into all year: using red carpet appearances to make a statement rather than simply cover the bump.
