Annandale councillor allays school bus concerns over road closure

Annandale North Councillor Stephen Thompson has stepped in to alleviate concerns for parents affected by the 10-week B7020 road closure between Lochmaben and Hightae.

The works on the B7020 Annan Road at Lochmaben, from the A709 to the sports pavilion car park, will be closed to accommodate new service connections for the royal burgh.

It has sparked worries for parents having to get children to school when classes resume on Monday after the October break.

Councillor Thompson has been updating the community and, in a statement, said: “The school bus operator has advised that they will operate from Hightae via Heck and then continue on to the A709 opposite the Creamery to/from Lockerbie Academy.

“There are no pupils allocated to the school transport on the section of road closed between Hightae Village and the junction of the B7020/A709 at Lochmaben.

“McCalls Coaches will operate at the normal pickup time in Hightae Village in the morning.

“They have indicated that the diversion route may take a couple of minutes longer to arrive at the Academy but they still have enough time to ensure that pupils arrive in time for the school start.

“If there are any issues on the first day back they will liaise with the school and parents will be notified prior to the afternoon journey.”

He said council officials have also advised the contractors that “there should be no machinery operating on Sunday morning when Lochmaben Church is in service and that they expect presence and progress on site seven days a week as the road must be fully closed for the duration of the works.”

Other measures include 7.5t weight restriction signs on the U56a and signs have been sited along the B7020 to advise “no access to Lochmaben”.

The councillor added: “The aim is to ensure that all works are completed prior to the festive period.”
