Annan's Newstart Recycle scheme gives out DVDs and books to help families in coronavirus lockdown

Annan’s Newstart Recycle has been giving out hundreds of free DVDs and children’s books to help families in lockdown.

To kick-start what would usually be the two-week Easter break for schoolchildren, directors Tony Nisbet and Frankie McGowan invited anyone passing their warehouse on Queensberry Street last Saturday to pick some up.

Tony said: “Our warehouse is closed to the public at the moment but we are working away in the background, helping people with emergencies.

“We have a lot of second-hand DVDs and children’s books in really good condition and we decided they would be ideal for kids in isolation or stuck indoors for the school holidays.

“So, acting on advice, we invited anyone walking past on their daily exercise to come to the loading bay to the rear of customer entrance and fill their own bag with some for free.

“We had sanitiser on hand and everyone observed the 2m social distancing. We are delighted that we could help.

“Now we are hoping that a local supermarket or store will let us park up on their car park and hand out the rest for free.”

Tony and Frankie are still helping out people who need microwaves, cookers, fridges and freezers and are helping Food Train and other groups.

Anyone needing help can contact Tony at 07762750401.
