Annan residents take a trip down Memory Lane with History Town Group

The opportunity for a trip down memory lane reeled in Annan residents to The Anglers on Tuesday afternoon on a double challenge.

Annan the History Town Group members Peter and Val Russell were in the club’s lounge to greet enthusiastic locals who came armed with photographs, memories and artefacts which could help a number of exhibitions to go on display this year.

The group is looking for information on grocers, supermarkets and the schools of Annan, whilst collecting bits and pieces on the history of the Annan and District Anglers Club too.

The Anglers is marking 10 years at its current High Street site this year – although it is much older – and now members Sean Black and Ellis Irving are on the hunt for information to establish some background of the building, the club itself and when it was above Graham the Barbers.

They are also keen for photos from events, competitions, prizegivings, ROM or even old member papers which can all go into an exhibition later this year.

In addition, Annan the History Town Group sounded an appeal so it can generate interesting exhibitions focussed on the town’s grocers/supermarkets and schools over the decades for their summer festival. They are still keen to hear for anyone with photographs which they can scan and return, or they can be emailed to Neil Carruthers on neilcarruthers99@yahoo.com, or via their Facebook pages.

This is not just for existing shops like Isherwoods, Johals, Atwals, Tesco and Aldi but shops from the past, such as the Co-Op, Templetons, Fine Fare, Taylors, Walter Willsons, Swalwalls. JB Raes and Wilson Brothers.

A spokesperson said: “If you have any memorabilia from the shops – uniforms, badges, flyers, bags, etc, or any photos of the shops and their staff that you could lend us, or if you have some memories or anecdotes, please get in touch.”
