Annan Athletic out to avenge Elgin City defeat in Galabank encounter

Peter Murphy is out to avenge last month’s heavy away defeat to Elgin City when Annan Athletic welcome them to Galabank tomorrow.

The League Two side were trounced 5-1 at Borough Briggs on October 1 and the manager wants his players to use the agony of that day to motivate them to three points.

He said: “We’re looking forward to the Elgin game on Saturday. We conceded five goals the last time we played which was very, very disappointing. We’re looking to get our own back on them shall we say. But we’re under no illusions that Kane Hester is one of the in-form strikers in the game at this moment in time - he’s banging in goals for them. But on the other side, we have another one of the in-form strikers in Tommy Goss.

“I hope the players remember the trip home after that game which was a long way back after conceding those goals.”

Annan enter the game off the back of two straight wins which puts them three points away from Saturday’s opponents who occupy the final play off place.

The Galabankies won 2-0 away to Stirling Albion last week courtesy of second half goals from Tommy Goss and Chris Johnston.

Murphy said: “It was a good 90 minutes overall. I thought we started off the game right and restricted them to just a couple of breaks and we were doing really well and pushing them back.

“I think they were quite surprised by us as they’ve been so confident. They had a man sent off which obviously changed the game in our favour.

“But they defended really well so we had to change it up a little bit with personnel and shape and that gets us the two goals.

“The 4-1 win against Forfar the game before was another excellent win. That was more of a psychological one I think because we were at the bottom of the league at that point and Forfar were two places above us.

“We have been playing well in games it’s not as if we’ve been totally overrun.”

An added bonus for Murphy is that his injury crisis has cleared up as he looks to go on a run in the league.

He said: “I’m delighted we’ve got all of our players back from injury now which means I can change things up in games if we need to.”
