Annan Athletic chairman backs SFA decision to suspend football due to coronavirus

Annan Athletic chairman Philip Jones has admitted the decision to suspend the season for three weeks is the right one.

The Galabank chief was part of the SPFL group call among all 42 clubs to discuss a manner of issues including the suspension of the lower leagues.

Philip said: “We can understand the logic in this decision.

“We don’t do the same testing as they do in the Premiership and Championship.

“We have temperature checks, questionnaires and that sort of thing but not the same level of testing – it just isn’t possible.

“I think it’s been done for the right reasons.

“There’s concerns over boys travelling the country for training and games then going to work and going home.

“The Scottish Government and SFA have made the right call.

“You can’t justify to part time players to play if they will have to stop working.

“Some of the lads stay in Carlisle and Glasgow.

“We don’t want them catching it and bringing it back to their families.”

The SFA made the decision to suspend all football below the Championship as case numbers rose.

The decision came in the aftermath of Celtic’s controversial trip to Dubai which saw 13 players and three members of staff having to self isolate after a positive case.

It is anticipated games will restart in February but only if case numbers drop.

A new strain of the virus is making that more difficult.

However it remains to be seen how much time clubs get to prepare for the return of football. That presents another issue with trying to finish the season on time.

Mr Jones added: “Last time we were in lockdown we were given a few weeks before starting.

“We aren’t allowed to train so they can’t expect us to come back straight away.

“One issue is going to be catching up on games when we come out of this.

“The season needs to end before the end of May.

“As things stand we’ll finish at the start of May but we won’t get much extra time.

“We’re missing the Scottish Cup replay and three league games.

“And if we win in the Scottish Cup, that’s another game.

“So we’re probably going to be looking at a lot of midweek fixtures in the second half of the season.”
