Annan Athletic boss Peter Murphy signs two-year contract extension

Manager Peter Murphy signed a new two-year deal at Annan and immediately recaptured two players.

He agreed his own contract then re-signed frontman Iain Anderson and midfielder Aidan Smith on one-year deals.

Murphy was offered his contract before the end of last season and began trying to keep a raft of players at Galabank while pursuing new talent for next season.

Now he has put pen to paper and also secured Smith, 24, and Anderson 28, for the next League Two campaign.

Anderson, who joined last year from Dalbeattie Star, said: “I am looking forward to getting back playing a full season.”

Murphy said: “I just had to sort out a few minor details of the deal before agreeing and signing but I had already been working on re-signing players for the new season.

“And I am close to making a few new signings to improve our squad for next season. I hope to make an announcement very soon on the players who are staying with us and also about new players coming in.”

Murphy joined Annan in 2017 and is now preparing for his fifth season at the Galabankies.

He added: “After what has been an unprecedented and eventful couple of seasons with what we have just come through as a club, I’m delighted to commit to Annan Athletic with the signs that things may be getting back to normal.

“We are looking forward to getting fans back into the club and building a squad that is capable of challenging at the top end of the division.

“All credit needs to go to the chairman, board and volunteers that have got us through this difficult period.”

Chairman Philip Jones said: “We are delighted Peter has agreed to stay with Annan for the next two years. Managing the team over last 18 months has been extremely difficult due to the constraints of the pandemic, limitations the club introduced to protect ourselves and the inability to train or play regularly.

“Throughout this period Peter worked hard and dealt with everything as it emerged to ensure we survived.

“We can now look forward to getting back to business and pushing for promotion in the coming season. “
