Annabel's faces fight to cover itself in blooming floral display for Chelsea Flower Show

Celebrity Mayfair club Annabel’s is in a battle over plans to erect a giant floral display across the front of its Grade I-listed home.

The members’ club, which had a £65 million renovation when it moved two doors down in Berkeley Square last year, wants to cover its Georgian townhouse in blooms to mark the Chelsea Flower Show.

But planning officers have said the move would harm the setting of the building and neighbouring houses in the terrace.

They say the club has twice before erected unauthorised displays on the building, in the Mayfair conservation area, and say that permission should be refused.

Three months ago consent was refused for the display of a giant 18m x 12m birthday cake, but planning officials say it was constructed anyway.

Annabel’s latest plan is to display a hoarding of flowers, fixed to scaffolding, from May 19 to 27 to “celebrate Chelsea Flower Show”.

But planners have told councillors, who will make a decision tonight, that there “are no public benefits to outweigh the harm”.
