There’s so much splashy packaging and witty sloganing around, isn’t there?
Lots of big promises and campaigns so airbrushed as to be virtually drawn-on. Of course, that’s half the fun of beauty products — the fantasy, the idea that make-up can change our lives, adjust our identities. But I also enjoy the pedestrian practicality of cosmetics. The way they can slot themselves into the rhythm of our days; delivering a boost, a smokescreen, a diversion. Everyday glamour achievable with very few pounds, in very few minutes. In fact, some less exalted brands give me huge pleasure because I feel clever for discovering them; shrewd for employing them and richer for having bought them.
Primark does a fantastic, cruelty-free lip gloss for £2 and it lasts longer than its less sticky, posher sisters. Avon’s mascaras start at about £5, profoundly fatten and lengthen lashes and don’t fall down your face. And Sainsbury’s, as part of its beauty expansion (much more floor space, many more brands) has redeveloped its own Boutique range with great aplomb — starting at £1.50. Currently in my bag is its Boutique Illuminating Drops in pink. Formulated with moisturising aloe vera and ultra-fine light-reflecting particles, it treads that fairy-fine summer line between gently radiant and subtly sparkling. Put simply, blended across cheekbones, it’s terribly pretty and added to tinted moisturiser, it has glow-giving properties. These drops come in at four quid: cheap, easy, good. Sometimes we need huge pledges and big adjectives. Sometimes we just don’t.
