Annabel Rivkin on the pre-fake tan scrub she swears by

Next week, I’ll tell you about a new range of fake tan that may well change your life, because it is so clever that it actually makes you not just more tanned, but prettier, too. But next week is next week. This week we are preparing for next week by talking about the sexiness that is... exfoliation. Because your fake tan doesn’t stand a hope in hell of looking smooth and radiant unless the canvas is hospitable. Dry patches and dead skin will result in blotches and splodges and all manner of let-downs.

Now, there are any number of excellent chemical and plant-based exfoliants that reveal what lies beneath through powerfully active ingredients. But there is a time to put those aside and head, instead, for a little old-fashioned light abrasion.

Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant, £51, is a rice-based powder which, on contact with water, releases salicylic acid to lightly polish the skin, and liquorice, oatmeal and white tea help brighten while soothing and balancing skin tone. Gentle but visibly effective.

As well as being fake tan season, this is also mini-break season, and this stuff is pure powder, so it won’t count towards your tiny, annoying hand-luggage bag of liquids. Which is a micro stress relief. Oh, and it also keeps pimples at bay. Good news all round, really.
