It has occurred to me that we should not be content with saving things for best.
That saving for best is joyless. That we could give ourselves a small but solid message of self-worth if we considered ourselves deserving of the best every day. That we could integrate this note-to-self more into the drudge of our working lives. And it is in this spirit that I introduce you to three glorious and rather expensive deodorants — all of which give me joy — which is not something one generally associates with armpits.
1. Twilly is a Hermès fragrance that opens with a shock of ginger and dies down towards a smooth, feminine sandalwood and tuberose heart. The Eau de Parfum is too girly for me, but the deodorant — apart from being housed in the world’s most elegant tin — delivers tiny shots of delight all day as it wafts Frenchly and does its righteous work. £28, at johnlewis.com
2. Malin+Goetz Eucalyptus deodorant comes in stick form, leaves not a trace of a white streak, and is aluminium-free (the aluminium element gives some doctors the cancer and Alzheimer’s willies) and vegan. This one is all about the refreshing eucalyptus and odour-neutralising citronella. The deodorant for the woman I want to be. So I’m sticking with it. £19 at malinandgoetz.co.uk
3. Aurelia Botanical Cream Deodorant is all good things: also aluminium-free, it contains arrowroot and kaolin to absorb moisture while essential oils lend a bit of zing (mandarin and lavender). Virtuous, elegant and effective. £18, at net-a-porter.com
