Anna Wintour Steps Down At Vogue After 37 Years, Here’s Who’s Tipped To Replace Her

After nearly four decades of orchestrating fashion’s biggest moments, Anna Wintour is stepping back from her iconic post as editor-in-chief of American Vogue. If you’ve ever seen a bob in the wild or watched The Devil Wears Prada, you know this is a seismic shift for the fashion world.

Wintour, who’s been in the top job since 1988, is trading her day-to-day Vogue duties for a global role at Condé Nast, keeping her as the brand’s global editorial director and chief content officer — so, not exactly disappearing just yet.

Who is replacing Anna Wintour as editor of Vogue US?

Now, the question on every fashion tragic’s lips: who’s going to fill Anna’s (very expensive) shoes? Condé Nast hasn’t named anyone yet, but the shortlist is already causing a stir.

According to Women’s Wear Daily and Forbes, three names are doing the rounds: Amy Astley, Chioma Nnadi, and Kate Betts.

Amy Astley, currently at the helm of Architectural Digest, is a familiar face in the Condé Nast universe. She launched Teen Vogue (with Anna’s blessing) and has a proven track record of making glossy mags work in the digital age.

Then there’s Chioma Nnadi, who took over British Vogue in 2023 and made history as the first Black woman in a senior editorial role at the magazine. She’s spent over a decade at American Vogue and is reportedly a favourite among the staff.

Kate Betts is the wild card — she left Vogue years ago after some rumoured creative differences but was once considered Anna’s likely successor.

Of course, there’s always a chance the job could go to someone already inside the Vogue machine. Deputy editor Taylor Antrim’s name has been floated, and Chloe Malle — who runs Vogue’s US website — could be a contender, especially given her Condé Nast pedigree.

For now, the official word is that the search is ongoing, and Anna herself will likely have a say in who gets the nod.

So, while Anna swaps her front-row seat for a slightly more executive one, the rest of us will be watching to see who’s bold enough to take on the challenge — and whether they’ll dare to wear sunglasses indoors.
