Anna Wintour hilariously 'snubs' Anne Hathaway in Devil Wears Prada Oscars moment

Anna Wintour appeared to show there are no hard feelings over The Devil Wears Prada as she shared the stage with Anne Hathaway at Sunday night’s Oscars.

The former Vogue editor-in-chief, who now serves as Condé Nast’s chief content officer and global editorial director of Vogue, joined Hathaway to present the awards for best costume design and best makeup and hairstyling during the ceremony.

Their joint appearance was a playful nod to the 2006 hit film, which starred Hathaway alongside Meryl Streep.

The movie, adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel, followed Hathaway’s character Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist who lands a job at the fictional fashion magazine Runway as the assistant to the formidable Miranda Priestly.

Weisberger had previously worked as Wintour’s assistant at Vogue, inspiring the story.

Wintour appeared happy to lean into the joke as the pair delivered a light-hearted sketch on stage, seemingly teasing the forthcoming Devil Wears Prada 2, which is expected to arrive in May.

During the segment, Hathaway began introducing the nominees for best costume design, saying: “Whether it’s two distinct jewel-toned hats, a meticulously crafted headdress, a simple pair of semi-rimless eyeglasses, complex and dramatic pieces that bring to life a Gothic classic, or watching red turn rust in 16th century England, a character’s costume is key to telling a story.”

Her voice then wavered theatrically as she continued alongside Wintour: “One could argue that one’s wardrobe in real life is also key.

“Does it make one appear elegant and attractive on, say, the most important night in Hollywood, and say when the most important people in fashion will be judging how one looks?”

Turning to Wintour, she added: “Anna, just curious, what do you think of my dress tonight?”

Wintour, keeping a straight face, ignored the question and simply responded: “And the nominees are…” prompting laughter from the audience.

Later in the segment, Wintour delivered another knowing reference to the film when she addressed Hathaway as “Emily,” a nod to Emily Blunt’s character, the long-suffering assistant to Priestly in the original movie.

Although it has long been assumed that Streep’s character drew heavily from Wintour’s persona at Vogue, the fashion editor refrained from commenting publicly on the film for many years.

She eventually shared her thoughts in 2025, admitting she had enjoyed it.

“I found it highly enjoyable. It was very funny,” she said. “Miuccia [Prada] and I talk about it a lot, and I say to her: ‘Well, it was really good for you.’”

Wintour added that the film’s humour was one of its strengths.

“It had a lot of humour to it. It had a lot of wit,” she continued. “It had Meryl Streep. I mean, it was Emily Blunt, [and] they were all amazing. In the end, I thought it was a fair shot.”
