CHENNAI: More than 2,000 top-ranking students joining the four campuses of Anna University including College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) and Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) this year will have a campus tour, counselling and games as part of the fresher’s induction programme this year as the university wanted to prepare the students for engineering education and introduce them facilities inside the campus.
The university will rope in experts for the games, activities, which will help create team spirit and understand the needs of the students individually. Based on the evaluation, the university will develop individual specific interventions to help students. Counselling and communication skills training have been planned for rural and government school students. “Last year, Anna University colleges had only 0.3% of students from government schools. This year 7.5% of total students are from government schools and from rural areas following the special reservation. They should not feel isolated,” said R Velraj, vice-chancellor of Anna University.
Students used to complete four years without knowing the facilities inside the campus. “To make them aware about the facilities and labs inside the campus, we have included a campus tour where the first year students will visit all departments and labs. It will help them to use the facilities while doing projects or research,” he said.
The university postponed physical classes for second and third year students for conducting this induction programme, which will be conducted in-person from November 1 to 13. After the induction programme, first year students will attend online classes for a month-and-a-half before returning to campus for attending practical classes.
The university accommodates one student per hostel room and prepares a schedule for physical classes according to that. At present, final year students alone are attending physical classes.
The university released the admission schedule for students who get seat allotments in the ongoing engineering counselling. The university asked students who got the seats in counselling in CEG, MIT and Alagappa College of Technology to report for admission from October 25 to 27 on various time slots.
