Anirban Lahiri set to join Saudi-funded LIV Series

Anirban Lahiri is all set to be unveiled among the latest set of pro golfers to join the rebel LIV Series, multiple reports said on Monday.

Lahiri, a PGA Tour card holder, would be among seven players including British Open champion Cameron Smith of Australia who are set to play in the next week's event in Boston hosted by the Saudi-funded LIV Golf, according to several media outlets quoting Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

Neeraj Sareen, a close associate of Lahiri, declined to comment on the reports but said the player would issue a statement in a day or two.

While the 35-year-old two-time European Tour winner will be the most high-profile Indian to join the LIV Series, Viraj Madappa already features in the player roster of the upstart league spearheaded by the legendary Greg Norman.

Other players who are said to have signed up with LIV are Australia's Marc Leishman, India's Anirban Lahiri, Chile's Joaquin Niemann and Americans Harold Varner and Cameron Tringale.

The PGA Tour has barred players who have joined LIV from competing in its events. The European Tour (now rechristened the DP World Tour) has been making its decision on a case-by-case basis.

Interestingly, the Asian Tour has struck a deal with LIV and has a set of co-sanctioned events under the label International Series. A group of nine players, headed by multiple-major winner Phil Mickelson of the US, have filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the PGA Tour.
