Animals seized from McHenry Co. farm, including horse that later died

Oct. 30--McHenry County authorities said Thursday that they seized several animals from a farm in the Huntley area, including a horse that later died.

The removal of the animals took place Tuesday at a Diekman Road farm and came after an investigation that began with a citizen complaint, according to a news release from the county animal control department.

"Upon arrival it was determined that a number of animals were in poor condition and emergency care by a license veterinarian was required," the department said in a release.

The horse, which needed advanced care, was transported to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, but the animal died shortly after arrival, department spokeswoman Keri Zaleski said Thursday.

The other animals, a goat and four juvenile pigs, were turned over to the Hooved Animal Humane Society, which was caring for them at the organization's facility near Woodstock. Some other animals deemed to not be in poor condition remained on the farm, and the animal control department said it would monitor their health.

A necropsy will be performed on the horse, and the results should be available in about a week, Zaleski said. No charges have been filed, and an investigation is continuing, she said.
