Animal theft: 'Substantial' number of sheep stolen from Lanarkshire farm

Lanarkshire police are urging farmers to ensure their sheep are safe after a “substantial” number were stolen from a rural location.

The local police division has issued some safety tips after the theft of the farmyard animals.

Farmers’ livelihood’s can depend on their livestock and these sort of thefts mean they lose out on a significant amount of money.

Sheep owners are advised to:

- Always secure gates with a chain and padlock and make sure all gates and fences are in good condition.

- Ensure sheep are tagged and, where possible, have an identifying marker.

- If possible, allow sheep to graze away from the roadside

- Regularly heard and count livestock

- Keep pedigree stock closer to home

- Report any suspicious activity/theft immediately to 101 or 999 in an emergency

Residents are urged to report suspicious behaviour on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
