Animal sanctuary desperate to find escaped kangaroo seen on the loose in Co Cork

An animal sanctuary is desperate to get its wallaby back after it escaped last week.

The marsupial has been on the run around Cork for almost six days with Andrew Boyle from Araglin Animal Sanctuary appealing for help to find him, Cork Beo reports.

The facility is located just a short distance from Kilworth near the Waterford border and is home to many exotic animals. Mr Boyle said yesterday: “We were away on holiday and it got out last Monday night.

“It’s unusual, it must have been spooked by dogs or something because it wouldn’t usually travel far at all.

“We came back on Thursday night and there were fresh droppings around the sanctuary then so it hadn’t gone far yet.

“No one had spotted it until the taxi man on Friday morning around Kilworth.Gardai told me it was spotted around Kilworth town again this morning so hopefully it stays there and he shouldn’t be too hard to catch.”

The wallaby, which is nameless, is harmless to people and animals and Andrew has asked the public to try not to stress it out if they spot it.

He added: “I’m just worried it could end up out on a road or something as obviously it has no road sense.

“It is actually quite tame and would know me so if someone sees it please get in touch and I can get down to it.

“Like most wild animals its heart rate will be going crazy so it’s important not to stress him out, the last thing I want is people running trying to catch it and rugby tackling it. It is harmless to other animals and only feeds on vegetation so it won’t cause any trouble.”
