Animal magic as Maybole vet pick up double award

It was a double whammy win for a vet practice with paw-fect services.

County Vets bagged not one but TWO awards at the Scottish Vet Awards last month.

The mixed practice, who have two establishments in Maybole and Ayr, caters for farm, equine and small animals, as well as providing a 24 hour on-call emergency service.

Team County Vets pipped others from across the country to the post, with nominations coming in from the Borders, Glasgow and Kilmarnock.

Practice Principle Emma Kennedy, who opened County Vets in 2012, scooped up Vet of the Year in the Large Animal category.

Having grown up on a farm and being a qualified vet for 14 years, Emma certainly knows a thing or two about animals and caring for her clients’ beloved pets.

Emma, 36, said the secret to a successful practice was the 13 enthusiastic staff members working together.

She said: “Everyone gets on well and we help each other out.

“We’ve got the same work ethic and same goals and attitudes.

“We’re a mixed practice- we do everything.

“I spend a lot of my time doing horse and farm work- I’m married to a dairy farmer and my dad was a farmer so I was brought up on a farm.

“I’ve always been around farm animals and I love getting out and about round the country side.

“Everybody does everything but each vet has their own area of interest.”

It was an extra special win for veterinary nurse Sandra Mellor who picked up Veterinary Nurse of the Year on her 53rd birthday.

Sandra, who has been at the practice for six and a half years, said: “I was totally dumbstuck and a bit overwhelmed.

“I did feel quite emotional- I still do when I talk about it.

“But it is nice to be appreciated for just doing something that’s your job.

“It is a tough job, it’s not necessarily easy.

“It doesn’t come without it’s lump in the throat moments.

“But when you work with such a great team, it’s fantastic.

“The way everybody works together- it has become an extended family.

“It makes it easy to come to work.”
