Animal Crossing: New Horizons patch update 1.1.1 has removed an item duplication exploit which was uncovered earlier this week.
Nintendo announced that there are some huge seasonal events on the way and that it will continue to update Animal Crossing with small patches to see them incorporated smoothly, as well as patching out bugs that happen to pop up like this item glitch.
This latest update which went live on March 26 was only tiny and it seems that the only thing the patch was for was to remove an item duplication exploit you could do in local multiplayer.
The glitch allowed players who were in local co-op to create multiple versions of items in-game, to then sell them en-masse for a huge profit.

People on Reddit were quick to discover that this was in fact the removal of the item duplication glitch. Clearly, Nintendo wanted to get rid of this as soon as possible.
If however, you still want to cheat Tom Nook then you'll want to keep you Switch offline for the foreseeable future, or you'll just have to keep the game running as it won't update until you close it and re-boot Animal Crossing.
This does mean that you won't be able to use any online functions until you update your game to the current version, however.
