Animal Behavior During Solar Eclipses: What Researchers Have Discovered

Campers try out solar eclipse glasses a day of ahead of the total solar eclipse in Southern Illinois

Researchers have observed interesting behavioral changes among animals during solar eclipses, shedding light on how these celestial events impact wildlife. During the 2017 total solar eclipse, tortoises at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas exhibited unusual behavior. Some tortoises were seen moving faster than usual, while others engaged in mating activities. Professor Adam Hartstone-Rose, a Biological Sciences expert, noted these behaviors but expressed uncertainty about the reasons behind them.

Professor Hartstone-Rose speculated that the eclipse might have triggered a mating signal in the tortoises, considering it as a rare event that could influence their behavior. However, he emphasized the need for further research to understand the phenomenon better. As another solar eclipse approaches, researchers are gearing up to study animal reactions once again.

During the upcoming eclipse, not only tortoises but also around 25 other species at the zoo, including gorillas and bonobos, will be closely monitored. The goal is to observe how different animals respond to the temporary darkness caused by the eclipse. Professor Hartstone-Rose suggested that the animals might be reacting to the sudden change in light rather than the eclipse itself.

Interestingly, some animals displayed behaviors associated with anxiety during the previous eclipse. The professor speculated that the animals might have been responding to the unusual excitement and commotion from people observing the event. This raises questions about the impact of human behavior on animal reactions during natural phenomena.

When asked about potential behavior changes in house pets during solar eclipses, Professor Hartstone-Rose mentioned observations of dogs either becoming quiet or exhibiting increased barking or howling. This suggests that even domestic animals may be influenced by celestial events, albeit in different ways.

As researchers prepare to study animal behavior during the upcoming solar eclipse, the focus remains on understanding how these events affect wildlife. The observations made during these rare occurrences provide valuable insights into the intricate relationship between celestial phenomena and the animal kingdom.
