Animal activists fall foul of the law after 'freeing' chickens

The activists are accused of breaking into the shed with chickens last month.

Police say a Facebook post in which a man boasted of how he rescued chickens and pigs from farms with a woman led to a couple's arrest for theft.

Police charged a 28-year-old Yaroomba man and 20-year-old Ashgrove woman on January 4 with the alleged theft of 13 chickens and pigs from separate properties on the Sunshine Coast on December 7.

Beerwah Police Officer-in-Charge Kim Cavell said the pig farmer had contacted police about his missing livestock after he noticed a Facebook post in which a man allegedly wrote "rescued: 2 baby piglets, 13 baby chickens = 15 saved beings".

Senior Sergeant Cavell said the pig farmer recognised the photos were taken on his property which led to the investigation.

The post allegedly described how the animals were taken.

"Don't you think everyone deserves a chance? Of freedom..or love?" the post read.

The couple were charged with two counts each of entering a premise and committing an indictable offence, one count each of stealing and one count each of stealing an animal that is stock.

They are due to attend the Noosa Magistrates Court on January 23.

A police spokesperson said livestock theft posed "bio-security risks for farms and businesses when animals are rehoused".

"Police will continue to monitor the issue on the Sunshine Coast."

Animal Liberation spokesperson Lynda Stoner said taking animals off poultry and pig farms without permission was important to "stop the suffering".

"People believe in the rights of animals and to stop their suffering and are prepared to risk their own wellbeing, without damage to properties, to rescue the animals that are wounded and suffering," she said.
