Angus Kinnear takes a swipe at Liverpool owner and hints at ownership changes

New owners are on the way for The Super League schemers in England’s top-flight according to Angus Kinnear in his latest biting column.

Writing in the Leeds United programme for Saturday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur, the chief executive has typically taken aim at the latest villains in the game.

In a barbed response to the recently failed attempt to launch The Super League, Kinnear also took a swipe at the video apology published by Liverpool’s owner.

In a piece to camera, John W. Henry sat down on his own and meted out an apology to Liverpool fans around the world, though others made a similar observation to Kinnear.

The Elland Road chief expects the measures being brought in by the game’s authorities should force some of the guilty owners out of the game altogether.

“The fall-out from the failed European Super League proposal has continued, and while the demonstration at Old Trafford stole the headlines, it is the nascent regulatory work of the Premier League, the FA and UEFA that will have the longest-lasting impact,” said Kinnear.

“Fortunately, the footballing world has not been fooled by the hollow expressions of contrition (even when delivered in the compelling format of a hostage video) and recognise the protagonists ultimately will, over the longer term, remain obdurate in trying to create the football oligopoly they crave.

“However, I believe the new regulations enshrining the principles of meritocracy, sustainability, financial solidarity and formalised supporter consultation will frustrate their ambitions to such an extent it will provoke a number of changes in ownership.”
