Angus Kinnear lifts the lid on Mateusz Klich's warning for Leeds United's board

Angus Kinnear has lifted the lid on the warning Mateusz Klich fired his way when he negotiated his loan exit in Leeds United’s boardroom last year.

Writing in his programme notes for November's Middlesbrough clash, United’s managing director reflected upon the contract extensions signed in recent months.

The Poland international was among those to sign on the dotted line, extending his stay in West Yorkshire until the summer of 2024.

However, the last time Klich had been in the club’s boardroom it was for entirely different reasons.

“Mateusz’s visit to re-sign in the boardroom must have been particularly sweet for him as it was his first since we were there to arrange his loan move to FC Utrecht in 2018,” said Kinnear.

“He told us we were making a mistake and he would come back to prove us wrong. He’s made his point.”

Veteran Pablo Hernandez was another to sign an extension recently. The Spaniard is committed until 2022, despite being 37 by then.

Kinnear defended the decision and said it would prove to be shrewder than even the contract signed with Kalvin Phillips in the autumn.

“With regard to Pablo, anybody who hasn’t seen him play this season may be forgiven for questioning the wisdom of signing a 34-year-old on a longer-term contract,” said Kinnear.

“We believe we are retaining the services of football’s very own Benjamin Button is the shrewdest piece of business we will do this year.”
