Angus Kinnear believes Leeds United's Elland Road return will set world record next weekend

Leeds United's Championship campaign is back with a long trip to Cardiff City this weekend, but preparations for next weekend's Elland Road return are well underway - and Angus Kinnear believes the club may break a world record could be set.

The second tier is restarting after the ongoing coronavirus pandemic shut the league down for more than three-and-a-half months, with the Whites looking to pick up where they left off and maintain their place at the top of the table.

A tough test awaits Marcelo Bielsa's men in their Sunday lunchtime trip to south Wales, before third-placed Fulham come to Elland Road next Saturday.

One of the many changes that we will see during the final nine matches will be teams playing in empty stadiums as the nation continues to guard against the ongoing pandemic.

This has led to clubs introducing a number of innovative measures to enhance the atmosphere for their remaining home matches, with the likes of QPR and Millwall pipping in crowd noise from the empty stands to the complement the action on the pitch.

Leeds United are among clubs to install 'crowdies' - personalised life-sized cutouts featuring pictures of fans - in empty seats at Elland Road for the club's final five home matches.

The club gave season ticket holders the option to have their own 'crowdie' as part of their season ticket rebate offer, while other fans could purchase them.

With the Whites' Elland Road return a week away, the club have revealed more than 15,000 crowdies will be in place - something Kinnear believes could be a world record.

"We're claiming 15,000 as a world record until we're told otherwise," the Leeds chief executive told BBC Breakfast.

"It's also important to give our supporters a chance to leave their money in club. We had several million pounds worth of refunds that we had to give to season ticket holders who couldn't be at the game.

"As we expected, Leeds supporters have been fantastic in trying to keep their money in the club, keep us solvent through this period, but also have an opportunity to show their supporter and show they're still here in spirit if not in body."
