Angus Gunn urges Scotland to secure Euro 2024 qualification in Spain

Angus Gunn wants Scotland to shrug off their England disappointment to secure a place at Euro 2024 when they take on Spain next month.

The Scots were well-beaten 3-1 by the Auld Enemy in their friendly match at Hampden Park on Tuesday night which marked 150 years since the two countries met in the first official international match in Glasgow.

Goals from Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and skipper Harry Kane earned the visitors victory, with Scotland’s response coming from a Harry Maguire own goal.

After beating Cyprus 3-0 on Friday, Scotland needed Norway and Georgia to draw in Oslo while they were in action against England to qualify from their Euro 2024 group, but the Norwegians ran out 2-1 winners.

Spain, who suffered a 2-0 defeat at Hampden Park in March, thrashed Cyprus 6-0 to move within six points of Steve Clarke’s group leaders ahead of the return game in Seville on October 12.

Norwich goalkeeper Gunn said: “I think we’ve put ourselves in an unbelievable position and the fact we have to go away to Spain and get a result, it puts more pressure on us but I’m looking forward to that and hopefully we can do what we did here at Hampden and beat them again.

“We lost to a top team and we are disappointed and obviously the other result didn’t go the way we wanted in the other game, so we will hopefully go to Spain and do the job there.

“With the result we had in Cyprus we were on a high.

“England are a top team. They played very well and they will be fully delighted with the win.

“As I said before, it shows how far we have come that we are disappointed in losing this game. I think we can learn from it, take it into next month and hopefully in the summer as well.”
