Angry shoppers fear panic buying is returning to Leeds supermarkets as shelves are stripped

Stunned customers surveyed empty shelves at Morrisons and Asda in Leeds today unable to believe that a second wave of panic buying could be starting again.

Although the majority of both supermarkets' shelves were full, there had been a run on some essential items such as toilet rolls, sugar and nappies.

On Thursday, Morrisons announced it would set a purchase limit of three on most cleaning products as well as essentials such as toilet paper, hand sanitiser and soap. And its rival Tesco was quick to follow its lead.

Supermarkets have pleaded with customers not to panic buy, with the searing memories of empty shelves still fresh in everyone's minds from the original lockdown in March.

However, with Leeds being placed back under strict new measures which could last for up to six months, there are concerns that people may begin stockpiling again.

There was anger in the aisles at Asda's store in Killingbeck on Saturday when customers realised all that was left on the toilet roll aisle was the cheapest kind of roll.

One female customer, reluctantly taking some, said to her male partner: "I'd heard about this on the news but I didn't really believe it until now.

"I can't believe we're heading back to where we were in March.

"I don't want to go through all that again. How can people be so stupid?!"

Another female customer added: "All the best quality toilet paper has been taken, all that's left is the dregs."

So far, the dark days of March have yet to reappear and the supermarket supply chain seems to be on top of things, but as we know all too well, panic buying for real can set in very easily.
