Angry residents install 'homemade' road warning signs ahead of new crossing

Residents who are angry at a 'dangerous' new crossing have taken the matter into their own hands by installing homemade warning signs along the road.

The makeshift signals, on the road heading toward Oglet Shore in Speke , were erected by people who say the unmarked crossing is in a 'ridiculous' place.

Campaigner Lynne Moneypenny said: "Some kind person has put up home-made warning signs to alert oncoming traffic to the new bridle way to Oglet.

"Shame neither Halton nor Liverpool Council thought to do this, or even turn down the application to put the path on a blind bend.

"The word 'SLOW' on the road is because of the bend, not the path, so it comes too late to alert drivers to walkers crossing over. What a stupid place to put an unmarked crossing!"

Another campaigner, and Hale resident Jane Hammett, says a meeting to discuss the crossing took place on August 29 at Hale Youth Club, and that Deputy Leader of Halton Borough Council Cllr Mike Wharton attended.

The ECHO understands Halton Borough Council undertook the construction of this crossing, but as this section of Hale Road is in Speke, the local authority has refused to comment.

A spokesman for Liverpool City Council said: "The council appreciates that residents have concerns about safety at the junction of Hale Road and the new bridle way.

"We will be sending officers out to inspect the site and we will be working with Halton Council to establish a way forward."
