Angry McDonald's customers unable to get their free McMuffin as app crashes

McDonald's customers woke up especially early this Sunday morning to make sure they got their hands on one of their free McMuffins.

But fans were left complaining as the app crashed - leaving hundreds without the tasty breakfast freebie.

A number of annoyed early-risers took to Twitter to share their angst, with some speculating the 'convenient' timing for the app to be down.

In a bid to help ditch the January blues, the fast-food outlet launched its 'Appy Days Calendar'- where app users can get themselves some brilliant deals on all of their favourite McDonald's menu items throughout the month.

On Sunday, January 5, the available offer was a free McMuffin.

But hopeful customers on the app were greeted with the message: "We are experiencing technical difficulties right now, please try again later" or "Sorry, we're unable to load the menu for that location. Please select a different location. [error:500]".

Shoppers were unable to take advantage of the offer (McDonald's)

Unfortunately, the item is only available on the breakfast menu so once the clock struck 11am, the offer was no longer available.

One social media user posted: "What a coincidence that your app is having technical difficulties? And staff refuse to honour it so you end up paying full price anyway?!"

Another said: "For getting us all up early in hope of a free McMuffin via the app, only to find the app is conveniently broken and will not load any menus - therefore you can't order? Great wasted morning of rushing about..."

A third user posted: "Why would you offer a free thing in the app but then not let you customers be able to actually get it?

"Told me it can't access the menu for my closest restaurant! Not impressed. Had planned my morning around something I can't even get now! #complaint".

The Manchester Evening News has contacted McDonald's for an explanation for their technical glitch.
