Angry defendant locked up for an hour after moaning about £125 compensation bill

An angry defendant was locked up for an hour after moaning about a £125 bill for swearing at a policeman.

The compensation was ordered when Ahmed Abdulla, 33, appeared in court and admitted being drunk and disorderly outside a pub on Forman Street.

Deputy District Judge Timothy Gascoyne told him: "You can pay the officer £125 in compensation.

"He doesn't need to have drunken people being rude and swearing when he is just trying to make it safe for people to go about their lawful business."

Labourer Abdulla, of Holland Street, Radford, replied: "I am going to go not guilty. I am not paying that. Change my plea to not guilty. It's really unfair."

As he continued to shout, he was taken back to the cells instead of being freed.

He was brought back into the dock at Nottingham Magistrates' Court just before the lunch break an hour later.

The judge then asked: "Feeling a bit more relaxed now?"

Abdulla told him: "To be honest, no."

As well as the compensation, Abdulla was ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and was given 28 days to pay the lot.

Peter Bettany, prosecuting, said police officers were called at 1.12am to the Revolution pub on August 3.

"He was being aggressive to the door staff," said Mr Bettany. Abdulla was issued with an order to leave the area but failed to go.

Mr Bettany added: "He was abusive and swore at them. He was plainly intoxicated and was arrested for being drunk and disorderly."

Kate Macmillan, mitigating, said Abdulla was annoyed because he had been assaulted earlier that night.

"He reported it to the police officer at the scene but they refused to take a statement.

"He was upset, became aggressive and swore at the officers, behaving in a disorderly way," added Miss Macmillan.
