Angry Coronation Street fans launch petition to stop football taking their favourite soap off air

Coronation Street fans were not going to take it lightly when they heard that their favourite soap is going off air for a whole week.

Between Wednesday October 9 and Wednesday October 16 there will be no outing to the famous cobbles because of the football - and a petition has been launched in the hope of stopping it.

Corrie's two double bills on Friday, October 11 and Monday, October 14 will be scrapped to make way for England's Euro 2020 matches.

Gareth Southgate's team will take on Czech Republic on the Friday followed by Bulgaria on the Monday for the competition's qualifying matches.

A petition started by fan Rita C on the change.org platform for change reads: "ITV cancelling Corrie for football will ruin many people’s evenings and routines of years and is unfair.

"Show earlier or later or on ITV2 is the better answer. Sign this so ITV see the loyal fans are outraged."

So far more than 400 people have signed.

"Put football on a different channel," agreed one fellow viewer.

"Fed up with soaps being cancelled for sport," said another.

"There's sports channels for this," argued another fan.

"Don't see why it has to affect the rest of us who don't care for football, it shouldn't be allowed."

But joining a discussion about the subject on Twitter, another viewer said: "Well football is real....... as a compromise put Corrie on late, the majority of people are able to record it or have access to ITV player."
