'Angry' Championship clubs call for transfer bans - report

Some Championship clubs are said to believe rivals who defer player wages should be given transfer bans.

The season has been suspended indefinitely for Nottingham Forest and their second tier counterparts, due to the coronavirus crisis.

And that is having financial implications for clubs up and down the football ladder.

The Sun claim some second tier sides are “angry” about decisions which have been taken by others - fearing those who defer wages could use those funds in the transfer market.

The report says: “Angry Championship clubs want cash-strapped rivals given transfer bans for deferring player wages.

“A handful of outfits who have paid on time think it is wrong others benefit from reduced payrolls.”

Swansea are said to be among those deferring wages - planning to pay players back over a year from when fans return to games - along with Wigan Athletic and Luton Town.

The Sun quote “one unhappy supremo” as saying about deferrals: “It is just kicking the can down the road. These clubs should be in for a transfer embargo.

“Why should those who balance the books and pay their players in full be punished? We won’t sit back and watch these teams make signings.”
