'Angry Birds' takes flight at the Friday box office and lands above 'Captain America: Civil War'

May 21--Fans of "Angry Birds" attacked the proverbial box office walls this weekend, taking the animated comedy based on the popular mobile-app game to the top of the weekend's haul.

"The Angry Birds Movie" pulled in an estimated $11 million on Friday. That should be good enough to land the film a weekend take of around $38 million to $41 million.

The movie features a notable cast of voice talent, including Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph and Sean Penn. Critics seemed more piggish on the $73-million budgeted film, however, giving it a fairly angry 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" chugged its way to second place on Friday, beating "Captain America: Civil War" with a Friday take of $8.74 million, but currently tracking for only a $21 million to $25 million opening weekend. That would put the raunchy comedy sequel -- which stars Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron and Chloe Grace Moretz -- at below half of what the first installment of the frat-franchise opened with in 2014.

"Captain America: Civil War" held on for a third week, taking in around $8.7 million Friday. The Disney comic-book action flick, starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, is looking at around $33 million for the weekend, adding to a domestic total of around $323 million and a near $1-billion worldwide gross.

Warner Bros' "The Nice Guys" looks to be meeting expectations with a $3.8 million take on Friday for a projected $11 million opening weekend. The dark 1970s noir-comedy, starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, pleased critics as well as fans, scoring 91% on Rotten Tomatoes as the best-reviewed debut of the weekend. To round out the top five, "The Jungle Book" swung into fifth, with $2.7 million on Friday, adding to a $319 million domestic gross.
