The ‘Angry Beetham Tower’ Twitter account has been closed down by its owner due to health concerns.
The account, which was set up a decade ago, tweeted as if Beetham Tower had come to life — and took on a malevolent purpose. Often, the account would ask users which object or organisation they would like to demolish using a poll — promising to destroy the ‘winner’ with ‘nuclear lasers’.
Aside from the ‘Smashurday’ polls, the account would also jokingly goad other towers — like the Stockport Pyramid — and tweet puns about news events. For years, its owner remained a mystery.

However, its owner has now revealed himself as Fat Roland — a music blogger and journalist. Announcing the closure of the Angry Beetham Tower account, Roland explained that a health scare has forced him into doing so.
Writing on his blog, Roland said he suffered a stroke on April 15, before heading to see electronic music duo Plaid at Gorilla.
“I might be the first person boogying at the front of a Plaid gig having suffered a stroke earlier in the same day,” Roland wrote. “I was disorientated because part of my visual cortex had fried, rendering me partially sighted.”
That means reading is ‘a strain’, he said, and certain screen activities are out of the question. He added: “And because casual social media browsing is no longer viable, I am retiring the Angry Beetham Twitter account which I have been secretly running for ten years.”
Roland also said he would continue to work on his music blog, and in his role at the Burgess Foundation.
