Angling: Sefton Sea Anglers celebrate at annual presentation

Sefton Sea Anglers celebrated their annual presentation at the Dunny’s Club on Monday evening and I was honoured and privileged to be a guest on behalf of the Liverpool ECHO to present the club’s annual trophies.

Welcomed by the chairman Richie McGibbon, this was a fantastic occasion that saw the club host more than 50 members.

Quite uniquely, the trophies covered three specific disciplines that Sefton SA pride themselves with, as beach fishing, a small boats section and a charter section make up the order for the 104 members to participate in.

As the evening went on, trophies and prizes were handed out to all the successful members who had taken part in competitions throughout the year and the celebrations were furthered with the ‘Fur and Feather’ contest awards.

Sefton Sea Anglers meet at the Dunny’s Club every fortnight on a Monday evening except for bank holidays.

On the bank inland, but still on the Mersey, Warrington DAA held another of their association matches on their incredible match length at Mersey walk.

In a close one which saw some superb roach caught, Burtonwood’s Mike Dench just edged second placed Kevin Hall.

Dench (Newton Tackle & Bait) is no stranger to these areas which have a prolific holding of quality roach and bream upon them and here confidently approached his swim, fishing the pole at 12 metres, by carefully loose feeding red maggot and caster.

Alternating between single and double red maggot on the hook, after what was a slow start, patience then enabled Dench to take the honours with 13.4.0 of quality roach in the last two hours of the match.

That was good enough to keep St Helens rod Hall at bay, as his creditable effort saw him in the frame with a close 12.12.0.

For Dench, this was his second win in recent weeks, after a fantastic catch of winter bream competing within the Newton-le-Willows club match held on Havannah Flash near St Helens a fortnight ago.

Dench took bream on the pole for a weight of 25.14.0. Newton’s Sean Dalby took second place with another fine catch of bream for 22.9.0.

Staying with the Newton anglers, even within this very cold spell, it certainly didn’t defer the over-60s and disabled members from taking part on their weekly match at Haydock Park Farm.

As the weather played havoc as expected on many waters, the hard cold spell didn’t stop the fish biting in this one.

Newton/Golborne Tackle & Bait rod Eddie Marcroft took the top honours with a superb catch for 21.10.0.

That catch saw off Ashton in Makerfield rod Norman Williams who took second with 8.12.0.
