Anglesey pub that shut in 2018 could be transformed under new plans

An Anglesey pub that closed more than four years ago could reopen under ambitious new plans for the site. The Crown Hotel in Bodedern was shut in 2018 by Marston's brewery and has been left an empty site since.

Now though a proposal has been submitted by the SBJJ Group Ltd to transform the site and reopen the pub.

The firms wants to extend the building, convert B&B rooms to three apartments and expand the outside beer garden and dining areas. They have unveiled how the new 'Y Goron' site would look.

SBJJ Group, with directors listed as Balbiro Kaur and Sukhvir Singh, has commissioned Fisher German LLP to submit the proposals. They say it will create 20 new jobs in the village.

The plans include:

  • A glazed extension is proposed to the front of the building to provide a larger restaurant area.
  • The outbuildings attached to the main building shall be converted and utilised as further open dining space which will be accessed from the rear of the pub.

  • The first floor currently comprises of four B&B rooms and a separate section for a proprietor. This application proposes to re-model the internal first floor area and create three apartments.

  • Two beer garden areas are proposed outside. One at the front of the building and a larger one to the rear, next to a new play area.

A statement from Fisher German said: "The applicants have lived in Bodedern for approximately 20 years and are local business owners within the community. They are aware the community needs something like this and have consulted with local people, many of which remember The Crown Hotel in its ‘heyday’ who are incredibly happy to hear they are proposing to bring this back into use as a public house."

They added: "The Crown Hotel has been closed for c.4-5 years, a key loss to the local community of Bodedern. To bring this public house back into modern day use, extensive refurbishment, repairs and extensions are required to make it an attractive family friendly establishment. The re-opening will enable a historic community asset to be brought back in to use in the village of Bodedern, whilst providing an employment opportunity for local people."

They said it would also provide three apartments which will help towards the local housing need in Bodedern. The statement added: "COVID-19 has brought about the requirement for outdoor eating and drinking areas (beer gardens) to be integrated into these establishments more than ever.

"Therefore, the proposal seeks large areas to the front and rear of the building. This will also aid increasing capacity during the key summer months when tourists and visitors shall be using the pub as well as the locals.

"The Crown Hotel will generate employment for the local area, with the projection of twenty full-time employees required, six of these will be chefs/kitchen staff.

"It is inevitable The Crown will have visitors from further afield, and in peak months tourists dining. Another benefit of increasing the tourism economy in the area, creating knock-on positive effects for other businesses.

"The proposal as a whole will massively improve this area of Bodedern, the proposed materials to be used externally are in-keeping with the character of the village, and the glazed extension is done tastefully and does not appear incongruous to the main building, providing a contemporary element. Utilising the outbuildings and converting for additional dining space is an effective use of dis-used space and creates a unique dining experience. The area will be regenerated through the development."

The plans have been submitted to planners at Anglesey council. A decision is expected in the next few months.
